REI Co-op Backpacker Low Review
Best durable gaiters for hikers needing reliable, year-round debris protection.
The REI Backpacker Low is a super sturdy, mid-height gaiter that will keep your feet and ankles warm and dry in any season. With a combination of features, they attach securely to hiking boots. These gaiters are for the hiker or backpacker who is looking for a single pair that can offer protection in both warmer and colder months. These waterproof and durable gaiters are a reliable standby for a variety of outdoor activities. They don't look the best, the excess strap length is a little annoying, and they are certainly not for lightweight or hot weather backpacking, but if you just need a versatile, affordable pair of gaiters, you can't go wrong with this model. They are durable, secure, and waterproof, but they are heavy for their length and look a bit chunky. Note that REI no longer makes this model. They are 10 inches high, offering a middle ground between low-cut ankle gaiters and full-length ones. The lower three-quarters of the material is extra-thick multi-layer, reinforced nylon, feeling almost like canvas and standing up exceptionally well to abrasion. The upper nylon portion is thinner and more breathable. They use a plastic tension buckle and strap at the top opening, which can require retightening over time. They feature an overhand metal lace hook and a wide instep strap. The front closure is a strong, wide velcro system, which can be tricky to align initially. They perform well in snow and keep out debris like soil and pebbles, sitting flush against boots. Weighing in at 3.5 ounces each (approximately 100 grams), they are average for their length but bulky. Overall, they are a great shoulder season option for those needing sturdy protection.

Know before you buy
Not really. While they are versatile, they are built with thick, reinforced nylon and are not designed for breathability in hot conditions. You will likely find them too warm and bulky for summer backpacking.
They perform quite well. The waterproof construction and 10-inch height provide solid protection against snow, keeping your feet dry and preventing debris from entering your boots.
The wide velcro front closure is very secure, but it can be a bit finicky to align perfectly when you are putting them on in a hurry. Once they are set, however, they stay in place reliably.
At 10 inches high, they sit in a middle ground between low-cut ankle gaiters and full-length options. They offer more protection than a simple ankle gaiter without the extra weight and coverage of a full-calf model.
The plastic tension buckle at the top can loosen slightly over long periods of movement, so you may need to retighten them occasionally throughout the day. The instep strap, however, keeps the gaiter flush against your boot quite well.
