This tall, graceful mug serves as an informal alternative to a traditional teacup and is a licensed product of Historic Charleston. The design is inspired by the Sacred Butterfly, a Chinese export pattern from around 1800, which featured traditional Chinese motifs of birds, butterflies, and flowers on European shapes. The butterfly motif carries a wish for the owner to live to a ripe age. These designs are rendered with characteristic understatement in traditional Chinese orange and gold colors in an all-over pattern. This successful marriage of shape and design was later reproduced in English china around 1800-1810. Our reproductions are based on originals held by Historic Charleston. This mug is dishwasher safe.
