Know before you buy
Yes. Unlike traditional aerobic composting, the Bokashi method uses anaerobic fermentation to break down all food scraps, including meat, dairy, and oily foods, without attracting pests or creating foul odors.
The bin features a built-in draining sieve and spigot. You should drain the liquid, known as leachate, every few days using the included drain cup; it can be diluted with water to serve as a potent liquid fertilizer for your plants.
When used correctly with the included EM® Bokashi bran, the process is virtually odorless. The airtight lid prevents smells from escaping, and the fermentation process produces a slightly tangy, pickled scent rather than the smell of rotting waste.
Once full, the bin needs to sit for about two weeks to complete the fermentation process. After that, the fermented scraps can be buried in a soil trench or added to a traditional compost pile to finish breaking down into nutrient-rich soil.
The kit includes everything you need to get started, including the EM® Bokashi bran. However, because this is an ongoing fermentation process, you will eventually need to purchase more Bokashi bran to continue composting your scraps.
No, this system is designed specifically for indoor use. It relies on a controlled environment to maintain the fermentation process, and the plastic construction is not intended for exposure to harsh outdoor elements or extreme temperature fluctuations.
