While wire is excellent for shaping smaller, flexible branches, this bender is designed for stiff, thick sections that wire cannot move. It uses a mechanical jack screw to provide the significant, controlled force needed to bend stubborn wood without snapping it.

The hooks and jack points are finished with a protective vinyl coating specifically designed to prevent scarring and bruising on delicate bark. However, for very thin-barked species, you may still want to wrap the branch in raffia or rubber padding as an extra precaution.

You should apply tension incrementally over several days or weeks rather than forcing the branch into position all at once. Once the desired shape is achieved, leave the bender in place until the wood sets—typically several months—to ensure the branch retains its new form.

The 5-inch size is ideal for medium-sized bonsai and branches that are too rigid for wire but not yet thick enough to require heavy-duty trunk splitters. It offers a compact, precise fit for branches that fall within its reach.

To keep the mechanism moving smoothly, it is a good practice to occasionally apply a light machine oil to the threads of the jack screw. Always wipe the tool clean after use to prevent sap buildup, which can interfere with the screw's movement.
