The tamping and distribution slots are specifically sized for 58mm portafilters. While a 54mm portafilter might physically rest in the space, it will not be a precision fit, which may affect stability during tamping.
Because the unit is made of solid wood, it is not dishwasher safe. To maintain the finish, wipe it down with a damp cloth and occasionally apply a food-safe wood oil or wax to prevent the walnut from drying out.
