Younger plants often have solid, heart-shaped leaves. The iconic fenestrations—or holes—typically develop as the plant matures and receives adequate bright, indirect light.

While it can grow on its own, the Monstera deliciosa is a natural climber. Providing a moss pole or trellis will encourage larger leaf growth and help the plant maintain a more upright, tidy habit.

It is best to water only when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.

Place your Monstera in a spot that receives bright, indirect light. Direct, harsh sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may cause the plant to become leggy and inhibit leaf perforation.

These are natural roots the plant uses to climb in its native habitat. You can gently tuck them back into the soil, let them hang, or trim them if they become unruly without harming the plant.

While the plant can produce fruit in the wild, it is very rare for an indoor Monstera to flower and fruit. If it does, remember that the fruit is only safe to eat when fully ripe; it is toxic if consumed while unripe.
