Know before you buy
The Fatboy tonearm features a 3D-printed armtube with a unique tapered design specifically engineered to cancel out internal resonances. Combined with high-end Nordost internal wiring and precision Japanese gimbal bearings, it provides significantly better detail retrieval and tracking accuracy than traditional tonearms.
No, this is a high-end audiophile turntable that does not include a built-in preamp. You will need to connect it to an external phono stage or an amplifier with a dedicated phono input to achieve the best sound quality.
The VPI Classic Signature uses a belt-drive system. To change speeds, you manually move the belt to the appropriate pulley step on the motor spindle.
The unit has a footprint of 19.25" x 14.25", but you should account for the overall dimensions of 20.5" x 15.5" x 9.5" to ensure proper clearance for the tonearm and wire loop. Given its 65-pound total weight, ensure your shelf or equipment rack is sturdy enough to support the mass.
The massive aluminum and steel platter provides high rotational inertia for exceptional speed stability, while the 2.5-inch thick damped plinth acts as a stable, inert foundation. Together, they minimize vibrations and resonance, allowing the stylus to extract more information from the record groove without interference.
While the specifications note Moving Magnet compatibility, the precision adjustments of the Fatboy tonearm make it highly capable of handling a wide range of high-end Moving Coil cartridges as well. You can easily adjust the counterweight to accommodate the tracking force requirements of your preferred cartridge.
