Know before you buy
Rock ’N Round® Midnight Velvet is specifically bred for a compact, sturdy habit. It maintains a neat, mounded shape throughout the season and is highly resistant to flopping, even as the flower heads develop.
To achieve the deepest burgundy-black foliage, this plant requires full sun, which means at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. If planted in too much shade, the leaves may lose their intensity and turn a greener shade.
Yes, sedums are generally unappealing to deer due to their succulent texture. While no plant is 100% deer-proof if food sources are scarce, Midnight Velvet is a reliable choice for gardens in areas with high deer pressure.
This variety is excellent for containers. Its compact size and upright, mounded form make it a perfect structural element for pots, provided the container has good drainage and is placed in a sunny location.
Once established, this sedum is highly drought tolerant and requires very little supplemental water. You should only water it during extended periods of extreme heat or drought; otherwise, it prefers to stay on the drier side.
You can leave the dried flower heads on the plant through the winter to provide visual interest and texture in the garden. In early spring, simply trim the plant back to the ground to make room for new growth.
