Tatarian Aster

Best reliable perennial for vibrant late season garden color.

This stately Tatarian Aster, native to Asia, was introduced to the West in 1818 and became more common in American gardens by the mid-nineteenth century. It features lavender-blue flower heads in large clusters atop tall stalks in early fall, reaching 4-6 feet in height from spreading clumps of paddle-shaped foliage. It prefers full sun or light shade and evenly moist, well-prepared garden loam. Hardy to USDA Zone 3, this perennial is attractive to Monarch butterflies and other pollinators, rarely needs staking, and has no serious insect or disease problems. It is useful in the back of the perennial flower border or naturalized in a wildflower area.
